European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
