One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial product within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company
The recent development escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Future Intentions
The founder stated how he plans to develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
